A compact firebush that carries the same orange-red tubular flowers on a much tighter frame than the species. In Miami it blooms from late spring into fall, holds evergreen through a normal winter, and pulls hummingbirds and butterflies all season. It takes heat, alkaline limestone, and drought once it is rooted. Two things to know before you spec it: the compact trade form is Hamelia patens var. glabra rather than the Florida native species, and dwarf is a pruning claim, so plan on shearing twice a year or it will push past eight feet.
