A fast deciduous shade tree that puts on pink flowers in fall and winter, usually right as the leaves drop, so the bloom sits on bare branches. It runs thirty-five to fifty feet tall with a forty to fifty-five foot canopy, so spread is what drives your setbacks, not height. The trunk and young branches carry cone-shaped spines, it builds heavy surface roots, and spent blooms and splitting pods make real litter, so keep it fifteen feet off walks and away from pool decks and play areas. It has almost no salt tolerance, which makes this an inland tree only.
