A Florida native that works either way: let it run and you get a twenty-foot multi-trunk small tree with peeling cinnamon bark, or keep it sheared and it makes one of the better native hedges available down here. Small leaves that smell like nutmeg when you crush them, white flowers, and red berries the birds clear out fast. It is one of the few things that does not go chlorotic on Miami oolite, and it handles salt wind, drought, and periodic wet feet. It grows about a foot a year, so spec it at the size you actually need rather than expecting it to catch up.
